The storyline follows protagonist Ash Ketchum as he receives an invitation to compete in the prestigious Pokémon Puzzle League tournament hosted in Minipopolis. Players must work their way through a series of escalating matches against Gym Leaders, rival trainers like Gary Oak, and members of Team Rocket to claim the ultimate puzzle championship title.
Unlike traditional falling-block puzzle games, Pokémon Puzzle League requires players to manage a stack of colored blocks that constantly rises from the bottom of the screen. Players can freely swap adjacent blocks horizontally to line up horizontal or vertical matches of three or more identical icons. Clearing blocks triggers combos, chain reactions, and garbage blocks that drop onto opponents' boards during competitive matches. Alongside the core single-player campaign, the game features marathon modes, 3D puzzle cylinders, puzzle editing, and a robust local multiplayer mode that delivers fierce head-to-head competition.
