Set in a sci-fi depiction of San Francisco in the year 2049, the game challenges players to pilot futuristic sports cars through steep, roller-coaster-like hills, subterranean tunnels, and towering skyscrapers. Unlike its predecessors, vehicles in 2049 are equipped with deployable wings that allow players to glide through the air after launching off massive ramps, adding a deep layer of aerial control and tactical positioning to every race.
In addition to traditional circuit racing, the game features a legendary Stunt mode where players score points by executing gravity-defying mid-air flips and spins within specialized arenas. It also includes an addictive Battle mode supporting up to four players in chaotic deathmatch arenas with weapon pickups. Despite the technical constraints of porting a powerful arcade game to the N64, the title delivered smooth framerates, responsive controls, and incredible multiplayer replay value.
